inside their head would know that Facebook had privacy issues. I have been using Facebook for long enough now that I am experienced enough to know about the general security settings for personal profiles like Making sure that privacy is set so that only your friends can view your profile and not putting your address on your Info page. A lot of people say that you shouldn't use a picture of yourself as a profile picture! I mean, I wouldn't get that paranoid (or would I?).
So, you may be wondering why I didn't write this article a long time ago. Well, that's because I was reminded of the issues earlier on today while I was just generally checking my Facebook profile and suddenly I got this message saying: "Want to know who is stalking you? Got an ex that is still viewing your profile? Click here to see who is viewing your profile!"
Now, obviously, me being me, a very sensible and reliable person, well aware of SPAM, phishing and other nasty internet scams and spyware, I didn't click on it. If you want to know the reasons, email me (pat@thegeekpanel.com).
After seeing this message, although I all ready knew what it wanted from me, I decided to Google it to see people whom serious things have happened to because of this very thing. As it happens, I came across this video:
I'm sure if you are a Facebook user, you will have either seen or heard something about this app, but let me warn you, all it wants is your information. You see, you are more vulnerable than you think. Your name is all ready ascosiated with your account, as is your email, as is your interests as well as many other things. You know that when you click on an app, it will say something like: "This app has the power to Email you directly at youremail@youremail.com and has access to your personal information and wall posts.
The idea to write an eBook warning people about the dangers of using Facebook and how to keep safe while using Facebook just entered my head a second ago. I will let you know when the eBook is finished. Remember that is you have any tips or bad Facebook experiences, I want to know to alert the community and your tips will go into the eBook.
Another thing to be wary about is the dislike button. Now, a few months ago, I admit it. I fell for it, but I did take extra measures after I realised that it was a scam. I clicked the link, and suddenly, It took me to a website where I had to click a Facebook Like button to (according to them) prove I was human. I was stupid enough to fall for this. I clicked it once, and nothing happened. I clicked again and still nothing happened. I clicked it a third time and it sent a message out to all of my friends saying "Facebook has a dislike button. Click here to enable it." Here was a link. It was a bad, bad link. Taking me, the gullible fool who clicked the Facebook dislike button.
Do not click the dislike button if it comes your way. If you fell for it like I did, immediately change all your passwords, email first, then all of your other passwords, clear your internet history and post 1000 status updates telling everyone to not use the Facebook Dislike button.
I hope this helped you.
